Amp Up Your Public Speaking Skills

Knowing one’s audience, creating and mastering one’s material, and preparing physically and mentally are your building blocks to effective public speaking, regardless of the audience size and the venue.

Keep on practicing. Fail and fail again, but never give up.

Abigail Ho-Torres

According to Ikigai Philippines Chief Marketing Officer and Trainer Abigail Ho-Torres, knowledge about the audience—key demographic information, behaviors, and other indicators—can help you craft messages that will resonate with them and allow you to achieve your objectives.

Once you have your message down pat, create a speech or presentation that is appropriate for your audience. Make sure to do practice runs and solicit feedback before you go on your Big Day.

On the day of your meeting, presentation, or talk, make sure that you prepare yourself mentally and physically: dress appropriately, carry yourself with confidence, and project your voice well.

These were but some of the things that Abi shared with members of this year’s batch of Meralco Power Academy’s Power Campers, a group of engineering students from all over the country who spent their school break learning the ropes of corporate life and the energy sector through on-the-job training and carefully curated workshop sessions on various topics.

She encouraged the Power Campers to “keep on practicing. Fail and fail again, but never give up.” After all, the best speakers started out as bad ones, too.

Ikigai Philippines offers customized workshops to build and enhance public speaking skills. These can be crafted according to participants’ learning objectives and skill levels. Reach out to us here for more details.
